Through that commitment we have gained loyal, lifelong customers, many of whom have been with us since the beginning."- Brandon Dockins When Brandon Dockins founded Top Choice Contracting, it was a part-time business while he was becoming certified in heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. He was a plumber by trade and decided to see if he could develop some customers on the side. "It was just me and word of mouth. I treated every customer as a referral. I began each job with the philosophy that customer service was and always would be my top priority," That philosophy has paid off. Despite moving up to Yellow Pages and directory advertising, 70 percent of the company's business today comes from referrals and repeat customers. Top Choice has matured into general contracting for both residential and commercial projects. Services include plumbing, concrete, electrical and remodeling, with the company's bread and butter coming from HVAC. As the one-man plumbing company took off in 1995, Dockins added concrete and HVAC services and an employee. He soon realized he was spending 40 hours a week on his part-time job so he decided to devote all of his attention to Top Choice. Unfortunately at the time he made the shift, business slowed down creating a challenge to him and his employee to stay afloat; but projects soon picked up again. After 10 years in business, Dockins went back to school and earned an engineering degree to augment his skill set. The company also decided to reach out to the community and each month the employees, as a group, find one family who needs their services but can't afford to pay. They either provide the services for free or for cost of the materials. "I constantly feel like I am on the edge of new joys and experiences that I could have never imagined," Brandon Dockins.
